Hi to all, Ive been to the Philippines many times BUT,,,,, never to Zamboanga
before. In October I will be visiting Zamboanga for the first time. I will definitely
post here after my trip. I have spoken to many expats who have been, or lived there
and here are my opinion of their own views. About 50% of people Ive spoken to say
"No way your crazy going there" but the other 50% say "No problems as long as
you stay in the safe areas and dont stand out. ( as lots of us foreigners at certain
times do. ) Anyway after my trip I will post my thoughts here. Cheers

I'm not afraid of visiting soutern mindanao. It all comes down to common sense and precautions IMO. Like I said in another post, Manila is dangerous as hell if you are not careful, same as NYC, Miami, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, etc...You get the point.
You make a good point about us not being able to blend in so well. But I think sometimes westerners make it even more obvious by wearing shorts and sandals. When I am in areas I am not too sure of, I just wear jeans and sneakers with a t-shirt or sports shirt. "Untucked" of course. It seems to be the national uniform of the Philippines masses and it's cheap, comfortable enough, and you don't stand out as much.
There are other good reasons not to wear shorts! Malaria, dengue fever, mosquito attacks, etc... Phil has all kinds of funky biting bugs and diseases.
When outside in the Phil, short of being at the beach or something, I am always in full length jeans and sneakers and high tube socks.
