When we are in the Phils, the cab driver expects it, the waitress, the bellboy, Housekeeping, your Barber....& the list goes on.
TIP....
Is a 100 pesos (it´s only $2... ) for the bellboy enough or too much?
What would be youre advice for a newbie when it comes to when & how much to tip?

My idea is to take many dollar bills. I will just give 1-2 dollars  I hope they dont get offended with that amount.

Ok, Let me fill u in on some useful info mate...
When u go the the Phils u want to bring your spending money in new crisp $ 100 bills that u exchange into pesos. $ 100 = (roughly) 5000 pesos.
U dont pay anything in $ but pesos...this of course goes for tipping as well.
What u do want, is to hang on to smaller bills in pesos such as 20, 50 & 100 peso bills. these u will use when u tip or pay the cab driver etc etc. if u hand the cab driver a 500 peso bill he will probably never have change for it (he has change for it but he´s hoping u will part with the 500 peso bill since u are a Kano & soooo rich).

Pesos are the way to go. If you tip in dollars, the recipient very often has to go specially to have it changed up, and has to pay a commission to do so. Most bars and restos would also prefer not to be paid in dollars either - this is not the US.
As for the amount to tip, that's a tricky one. Is it correct to tip someone the equivalent of half a days wages? I always tip, but the amount depends on where I am and how much I have spent. And, of course, the quality of the service!

Cheers ! I am NOT tipping anyone in the Phils when I get there!! Nor will I be paying any kind of a bribe to crooked cops even if they are underpaid and underappreciated.

Yeah, VERY much so indeed !
Ecach to his own.... But, considering this is the Phils, a tip (after recieving good service) is expected.
Those who don´t leave a tip (especially Koreans) will in time find out that the treatment/service they get is not as good as what a Kano or Jap tourist would get.
As a Kano (western foreigner/tourist) u have the advantage that u´re $$$ will go a long way in this beautiful country. What i mean is; u can afford to leave a well deserved tip without it beeing a strain on your wallet.
When it comes to paying off cops on the take....well, that´s another story... U just might find out that u don´t have much off a choise (depending on the situation).

Yes, tipping and paying off crooked cops are two separate issues. Many people make up a sizeable portion of their wages from tips - that's the system here, whether you agree with it or not. I'm not a fan of it - personally I don't see why I should be responsible for paying the salary of my waitor in a restaurant. That should be the bosses responsibility! We don't tip staff in supermarkets, for example. But it is how it is, and being a skinflint will get you nowhere!

you dont necessarily need to tip here in the Philippines coz most restaurants/bars already charge a 10% service charge on top of your total bill...
however, if you're feeling generous and you think that the service is good then tip all you want.

you are confusing the word tipping with bribing...they totally have different meanings dear!

| It's important to check the menu to see if service charge is included. Here in Boracay most restaurants don't already include it. Only the high-end places tend to do that.

So, in other words the staff at the places where it´s not included would prefer NOT having Koreans as guests eh? (since they ever hardly tip at all).
I wonder though.... the places that have it included.... do they really pay the staff the service charge? (my point is; are there places that will try to withhold it from their staff).
On another note, when in Bohol i asked a waiter at a Resto if the tip that i left would be divided among the staff or if he could keep it for himself. His reply was that if the tip was left with the "check" it would be divided.
So, after that, i left coins with the check & put a Php 50 note in the waiters hand.
Personally i believe that the tip should go to the individual effort & not be divided equally.... but, that´s just my opinion .

I have mixed feelings about that. I discussed the issue with a restauranteur friend of mine and he pointed out that the kitchen staff often work harder than the waitors and in hot, uncomfortable conditions, and they deserve a share of the tips too. But being behind the scenes they are rarely remembered. I do agree though that I prefer to tip my waitor directly and reward him or her personally for good service.

How much do the Filipinos tip? 10%? 0%? I haven't been to PI for many years and I can't remember. When I arrive I will do as they do.

Yeah, agree with showbiz..... However, cant honestly say that i´ve seen filipinos in general tip 10-15%. But, it´s more or less expected from us Kanos .

I always tip the taxi drivers 20p except when they ask for 20+ to go to MACTAN at night. They ask for more b/cuz they may NOT get a fare on the way back.
I'm going to start my own taxi company and call it HALF FULL TAXI.
Half Full refers to the amount of GASOLINE in the tank. 
I've learned to ask the driver if he plans on stopping to get gas before I get to my destination. It comes out of the tip if he stops and doesn't stop the Meter.
If the restaurant has the 10% Service charge in the bill I tip if the service was firendly AND I plan on going back there.
Try to have 25 Sentavos on hand at the grocery stores. They like it when you make an offer to pay that when your bill comes to 500.25p

One of the things that I learned, was that it depends on where you are at. A 50 peso tip in the villages in northern Mindanao is pretty good, but in Makati City, maybe not so much. So it depends on what part of the PHILIPPINES you are in, which Island, City, Village and the economic situation of each place. thats my opinion

Well Put Kevin,
Since the majority of my experience is in Cebu, that's what I usually speak of. Most of the time I ask my LOCAL friends on what a good tip is and it's between 20p to 50p.
