What you guys think about those taxi drivers charging a LOT esp at the airport.
Isn't it very irritating that you know how much you should pay to them and yet they'll charge you like 3-4 times higher?

Well, for me it still sounds cheap. But I'm not from there.I live in a small town here in the USA. Here in my town, Taxi service is expensive, they don't get a lot of business, so they charge a little more to stay in business.
I wouldn't know if it was expensive or not in the PHILIPPINES, until my wife told me. Ignorance is great, when you are on the receiving end of a money making deal.

Taxi drivers here are, by and large, thieving A-holes, so treat them in that manner.
Demand that the meter be used before even setting foot inside of the taxi, & ensure that it is turned on before you start moving. These Clowns are great at saying..."oh, don't worry, it won't be too much..."
Make a show of writing down the taxi number, owner's info & especially the driver's name...even ask him, even though it will probably be displayed. Have the DOT number for reporting errant taxis & if the driver is trying to pull a fast one, call them right then and there, if you have a cell phone.
Visitors to the Philippines, whether they be Balikbayans or foreign tourist, need to forget about the expected level of service & common courtesy back in their own countries, & be prepared to get in people's faces here when (not if) they try & rip you off...if not, then don't be cryin' about being taken advantage of, because the A-holes ripping you off view you as nothing more than a "Walking ATM machine."
Only when both, Filipino & Foreign consumers start fighting back, will we start to see a turn-around in the un-ethical way business is done here.

| Nah, in Manila wheather your foreigner or not many drivers are still cheating, they pretend that they are not familiar with the place in the middle of the ride so it ends up like a tour. I was a victim when I was there for my medical and interview, unfortunately all of them are cheaters no one was good....

Yeah Tommygurl, You´re right about many of the taxidrivers trying to overcharge u.....not only Kanos/foreigners but also Filipinos who are not from around there.
When in Manila last November we got in a cab going from Malate back to our Hotel in Makati, it was late at night & dark & i´m not familiar enough with the area to be able to tell if he took the fastest way back or not but it felt like it took way to long.... I tought...Ok, when we get to the Hotel i´ll just pay him what i feel is fair & leave...The weird thing is that when we got back the price didnt seem to be bad at all probably was higher then it should have been....but still....
After that we only used "our" Makati driver Freddie (contact info for him can be found in the Driver/tourguide Forum). Sure, he ended up beeing more expensive then a cab strictly on the meter considering the tip i gave him but Freddie never tried to take us on a "tour" or anything like that & VERY helpful.
Cheers!

well i tell ya what, it's not only the taxi drivers that are conniving bastards, if you ever go to malapascua island you have to go to maya and get a boat over, the regular boat costs 40 peso but the arseholes at the pier approach newcomers who don't know the score and tell them it cost 600-800 peso for special trip. i met 2 germans on the boat and they were fuming that i payed 40 and they payed 600 to be on the same boat.
anytime i arrive at a new place and have to change transport i just go walkabout for 30 minutes, stretching my legs, having a ciggie, and most importantly making myself aware of the scams. the problem for most people is that they are in too much of a rush when walking out the airport to even think about a little walk to the domestic departures terminal where cheaper taxis are plentiful or in the above case they didn't even think to ask at the ticket counter before allowing themselves to be ushered to the boat. When taking a taxi from the airport, in Cebu anyway, you must be firm with the drivers. Here is my advice anyway, regarding taxi's in Cebu:
When arriving in Cebu, do not take any of the taxi's outside the terminal. Rather, walk across the street, through the gate and go right on the sidewalk. Take that to the end of the building, then turn left. Walk up the stairs, toward the outbound flights area. When you go up there, you will see taxi's that have just dropped passengers who are departing. These taxi's are usually a bit more reasonable to deal with, since they just made money bringing someone to the airport.

exactly mate, but how many people do you see take the time to check out their options? NOT MANY. i always have a reccie coz i see the same shit everywhere, i think taxi drivers are the same everywhere, the amount of people who get ripped off at heathrow airport goes to show that it's not endemic to the philippines.
when i arrived at cebu i was told 350peso but 50 metres away i found one who used his meter and it was only 140 so i gave him 200 for not being a greedy money grabbing tosser. so to anyone out there, when you go to cebu do as paul directs and cross the road and walk upstairs, COZ YOU CAN!!!!

I do find it very annoying that these taxi guys are allowed to get away with over charging white people..
I have been to the Philippines a few times and now i live here so am more wise to it but two friends of mine were told the meter is broken and where charged 500 pesos for the same journey that cost me 225.
Can these taxi drivers not all have a number where they can be reported to help sort this problem out?
