I was watching ABS CBN (Filipino TV) and in a program about travel and living in the Philippines, a guy, I believe he was an Aussie, was asked why he liked living in Cebu. He said the felt the people were more polite there (in Cebu and Visayas). He said that in Visayan there is a word for "PLease" and many people use it. He said that he hardly ever heard someone say "please" in Luzon. He wasn't sure if there was even a word in TAGALOG for "PLEASE".
Myself, if & when I move to the PHILIPPINES, I think that I would rather live in the VISAYAS, for a few reasons. The people do seem to very, very polite there. It is more like Mindanao, but a little more of the conviences that I'm used to, and it is centrally located, so to visit the rest of the country, it's not too far to travel either direction.
So what would be your reasons for choosing your location? Location, the People, Family?

Well, it´s for me & my wife to early to say yet (need to see & spend time at more places/cities) before we know where we would like to stay.
What i did notice at our recent trip to Bohol, is that i´m too much of a city boy (my wife feels the same way) to be able to settle down somewhere too far away from the city pulse. However much it´s nice & all with the calm "country side" ambience & mentality of the people.... i would just get restless & bored not having easy access to the Malls, the Restos & so on that can be found in a bigger city.
So, i´m not sure.... but, finding a place within resonable distance to the "pulse" would probably be the optimal solution for us. Then, we´d still have the possibility to take trips to Bohol, Boracay or any other nice place for the beaches when we feel like it.
But, there are several trips ahead of us before settling down is an alternative, which means we´ll have lots of time to keep exploring the Phils .
Cheers!

If I were you I would NOT move to Cebu.
The people are much too nice.
The weather is great.
The food is outstanding.
Please don't come to Cebu.

That would be a BIG change for me. I'm kinda use to (but still don't like) Grouchy People, Lousy Weather, and Fast Food, here in Central ILLINOIS in the USA...
I might have cultural shock having things that nice .
Thanks for the reply...

| I think luzon people are also polite in a different way. visayan people are more submissive and i think more innocent, i only been to some parts of visaya, like boracay, i have a lot of visayan friends that live in luzon:-)

I initially retired to Luzon because this was the area that both the wife & I knew, plus it was the closest to her family (not that I would live too close to them), but after 10-years here in Luzon we have had it with the rude attitudes encountered daily.
I am not even talking about my own experiences as I am busy working most of the time. My wife relates stories almost on a daily basis of just plain out rude & inconsiderate behavior from tinderas, waitresses, jeepny drivers, etc. We have seen this all throughout Luzon as if it is an infectious plague. Don't even get me started on Manila.
Well, enough is enough...we will be relocating to the Visayas in a year or so. I was thoroughly pleased with the politeness shown, w/o be subservient, when we visited there. It was like being in another country.

Typically, people who grow up on Luzon look down upon other Filipinos from other provinces. Unfortunately, you are from "Luzon", or you are from "the provinces". Basically, this is just big city attitude and mentality.
People in other parts of the Philippines, or so I have noticed, do not act the same way.
For those who wish to live in the Philippines, you will find the people more polite in the mid- and southern regions of the country.
