Canon ixus 500 / Powershot s500

It´s ixus 500 in Europe (at least in Sweden it is) & Powershot s500 in the US, same camera just different model names depending on where they are sold.

First of all, I´m NOT an expert on Cameras or Photography.... I just point & shoot !

I´ve gone through 3 different digital cameras (all Canon) before i bought this one & this is the best one of them all.

What makes it my favorite is not the 5 megapixel, it´s the size of the camera itself & the battery capacity.

Before digital cameras were supplied with Lithium Ion battery packs you had to bring 1-2 xtra battery packs with you when you travelled. This is not an issue in the same way nowdays, at least not with my Canon.

It uses Compact flash memory cards... & as usual, the size of the card supplied with the camera is crap (low), so buy a larger size card right away!

Personally i think the hype with the megapixel race is just that, Hype! The quality of the pics taken with my current Canon & with the one i had before (also a Canon, but a 3.2 megapixel) is about the same. What i do notice is; the smaller the cameras get, the more dependent they are of good light (sunlight) to produce nice pics.

Anyway, I´m very satisfied with my Canon & will probably be faithful to Canon the day i upgrade.

For u Tech geeks; I´m not gonna get into specs on the camera. If u want to know more you can follow one of the links below.

for me, the best digital camera is one which uses ordinary AA batteries.  i had used a canon S50 before and always complained about its loss of power when the batteries ran out.  there would be no other way to get the power on but to recharge.

unlike having an ordinary digicam which used AAs, i could just run to a 7-11 store and get throw away batteries immediately.

My Cannon Ixus (which I loved and took everywhere with me) suddenly overnight developed a fault - the display screen no longer lights up. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Do you know if it is a difficult fault to fix or should I just get a new camera? :(

Well, if u´re a gadget freak:)... U´d by a new camera. However, in the US or Europe it would cost ALOT to even have a tech shop look at the camera but of what i´ve heard the tech shops in Manila can work wonders (& cheap) with not only Cell phones but digi cams as well. At least it´s worth a try.... if they can´t fix it for a resonable price..then buying a new cam might be one alternative.

Buying a used digi camera is not a bad idea either, especially since u can buy a new clone battery pack ($10-15) for your (Canon if that´s your choice) cam & it´ll be like a new cam ! I´ve seen ads on "Buy & sell" (a Filipino site) where people sell my Canon powershot s500 for less than $200 (when i bought it new in Sweden it was almost $600).

Cheers!
