Just bought a Nikon D80 with a 18-55/3,5-5.6 VR lens a few days ago & this is a pre evaluation that will be updated after a while.

Here are some specs:

10.2 megapixel Nikon DX format CCD imaging sensor

New high-resolution Nikon image-processing engine

Instant 0.18 sec. start-up with fast 80ms shutter response

Continuous shooting at up to 3 frames per second and up to 100 consecutive JPEG images

Up to 2,700 images per battery charge

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II plus variable center-weighted and spot metering

In-camera image editing with retouching menu

Built-in Speedlight with Nikon i-TTL flash metering and two-group wireless commande

2.5" LCD color monitor with 170-degree, wide-angle viewing

11-area AF system with wide-area center segment and auto-area AF functions

Seven digital vari-programs plus programmed auto with flexible program, shutter-priority auto and manua

Image optimization mode

Large, bright 0.94x viewfinder

Built-in slideshow function with Pictmotion

Here are a couple of pics of the Nikon D80:

Now, why did  i buy a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera)?
Well, got tired of the compact cameras limitations...such as way too slow starting up, too slow taking the picture & not very good at close ups...or not good enough. It can take 3 pics/second which is also good.

The Nikon D80 has auto focus in the body but not an image stabilizer....so, if you want the latter you will need that in the lens...hence the VR.

I´m really impressed with some of the few pics i´ve taken so far but also realize that an external flash is high on my to buy list of accessories (there is a jungle of accessories out there) compared to what my Canon ixus 500 can produce...not that the Canon cant produce just that it has limitations. This does´nt mean that i will get rid of my compact...not at all, i want it for when it´s not practical to bring the DSLR.

Here are a few pics of our Dogue de Bordeaux pup taken with the D80 (please have in mind that i have no clue yet of what i´m doing when it comes to taking pics with a DSLR camera...but still ;):
These pics are taken with the built in pop up flash.
