WOW - this is a nice camera!

First I want to say that I have not had this camera long, just got it.

After reading some from the paper manual and from the CD ROM & trying some practice shots, I am really liking this camera. :D

For all of you that want a point & shoot camera, that you don't need to do anything else with, this is not for you. But why would spend the extra money on a camera unless you wanted those extras.

That said, those extras come with needing to know how to use the camera. The auto focus takes a bit of training to get the focus right, but only when you zoom in. I know this doesn't make much sense at first, it is "auto focus" right. YES. Also there is NO picture stabilizer built in. Again, this is no problem, unless you ZOOM close in and are moving (distant zoom seems to be no problem).

The 10X OPTICAL  Zoom is GREAT! :D I took the camera out and I brought my wifes camera along. I pointed both at the same object, I was amazed at how much of a difference a 10X makes over a 3X. Also, the SP-500 UZ has a threaded barrell so additional zoom or wide angle lens can be added. :D The digital ZOOM can be disabled, which is what I do, I figure I can always crop later if needed.

The 6 megapixel is really nice, if needed, I can "crop" a photo and not distort the quality!

It has a 2.5 inch color LCD display, but if you want, you can disable that and use the old fashioned view finder - that means less battery use :D.

Speaking of batteries, it uses 4 AA batteries. But they seem to really last.

There are 27 shooting modes! - Who needs 27 modes? They are there if you need them!

Its has a video mode - WITH AUDIO - that's right, sound also.

I could go on and on. After comparing the photos taken with the Olympuse SP-500 UZ to the photos taken with the Olympus FE-110 digital. I am VERY happy with my purchase.

Another nice thing, those Xd memory cards have come down in price. That's a real good deal.

Olympus Price $349.99 - U.S. dollars. I picked mine up NEW for $270 total, shipping and all! E-purchase from eBay.

Sum it all up....... If you want a better camera - I say pick up an Olympus SP-500 UZ - but be prepared to spend some time to really learn how to use it or some of your pics will be out of focus or dark, or both.  If you just want a plain point & shoot - buy yourself a cheaper camera, my wifes Olympus FE-110 takes really great pics, and can be had for around $100 - $150.

Here are 2 pics. The 2 photos are taken with in seconds of each other, same location, same lighting. I was standing in one room of my home (in the dark) and snapped the pics. The lights were on in the next room where the camera was aimed. Flash used on both camera shots.

The first pic. is with the Olympus SP-500 UZ fully Zoomed 10X opticle.

The 2nd photo is with the Olympus FE-110 fully zoomed 2.8X opticle.

I'm sure you see the difference! The Olympus FE-110 is a nice little camera, but NO comparison to the SP-500 UZ.

Using the Olympus SP-500 UZ in both photos:

1st photo is of the local Catholic Church.

2nd photo is when I zoomed in on the Cross on top of the Church.
