there are a number of good subdivisions to choose from in bacolod city.  the big ones are a bit outside bacolod (suburbs).  namely, ayala northpoint and town & country windsor ( where the streets have english names...actual street names from the London A-Z LOL!).  lots are quite big, 250 sqm to 500 sqm....and some have even purchased 4 lots to have a total of 1,000 sqm.

personally though, if i were to live in bacolod, i would look for a subdivision wherein residents are less pretentious and less ostentatious.  one would have to understand the sub-culture of the bacoleƱos to realize why it's better to live in lower profile subdivisions.  there are other subdivisions which may not "ring the bells" when you tell acquaintances that you live there, but these are likewise exclusive and not really the flaunty type (i could name you 2 others).

it really depends on one's needs.  some of these folk living in ayala and town & country have bought into those subdivisions in order to subtly declare to friends that they have indeed arrived.  in my honest opinion, i think a PhP 10 million price tag for a house and lot in any of those subdivisions is too high a price to satisfy any psychological insecurities most of these people have.  having said that, i don't have any proof to that these people are ailed with such, but it is not too difficult to suspect that as you get accustomed to the lifestyle of people in bacolod.

oh, one last item, i think you are making the right choice in staying in bacolod for retirement.  there's enough rural adventure all around it while still being able to maintain some urban activity most foreigners have grown accustomed to.

hope this helps.

Hi,

I was asked by someone to see if I could help here, however, unfortunately, I know very little about Negros Occidental, as I have never visited that province directly.

If I can find any additional information, other than what has been posted, I will forward it on to you.

Thanks Maven, for giving a very informative post!

Hello Maven,

Thank-you so much for you post about Bacolod City.  I couldn't agree more with what you said about the subdivisions.  My wife, Marilu, and I own a house in Villa Angela.  Currently the house is for sale as we'd like a little larger house to accomodate visitors from the USA when they come for our medical/dental/feeding missions.  We looked at Ayala, Town & Country, Bethany Court, etc.  Bethany seemed to be okay but the other two were just too pretentious for our taste.  No offense to those living there -- I'd just feel a little more comfortable in a place with a little less "glitter".

Best regards

@jim, why don't you try hopping over to sta. clara executive village.  while the subdivision is exclusive (96 total units), the houses look practically the same.  this eliminates the idea of being pretentious.

the average size of the lot there is 150 to 200 sqm.  however, this one particular house up for sale was built on 2 adjoining lots making the lot area a minimum of 300.  nice house.

it will also be very convenient for your guests as well because in the absence of transportation, they could just walk out to the subdivision gate and find numerous jeepneys headed for robinson's.

cheerio!

Didn't realize there were folks on these boards who live or are thinking of living in Bacolod. Will make sure and post next time I go back there. :)
