I'm an American that wants to fly to the Philippines to get dental work because of the quality and costs when compared to the USA.
My wife is a Filipina, so through her I have learned about the inexpensive Dentists in the Philippines, but she has not been back to her own country in probably 15 years, so she does not really know what is going on in regards to who the best Dentists are.
I've been doing a little bit of research and have found The Sacred Heart Dental Clinic:
http://filipinodentist.com/dentalclinic/index.htm
I'm hoping to find the best Dentists in the Philippines, with quality work that can match USA Dentists at much lower costs...
THANKS

Welcome to ThePhils.com !
Regarding cost.... as far as i know ALL dentists in the Phils are cheaper than US dentists.... more or less.
My advice would be to try to find a filipino dentist that caters to foreigners, expats & "rich" filipinos, that has an autoclave, disposable instruments AND one that has a good reputation among all 3 groups. Recommendations & referrals would be the best way to go.
One aspect of it all that is a handicap for us tourists is that we fly in for a few weeks...then we go back home. Meaning, IF there are complications regarding the dental work....we can´t just go back to the filipino dentist since we´re no longer in the Phils.... & if a dentist wants to cut corners & do sloppy work...this is a good incentive (the part of us flying back home in a few weeks ).... the customer will simply not be around to complain or want his money back.
So, what is very important for tourists AND expats is to use the power of the web & write reviews of dentists (good or bad) so that other customers can choose wisely (this is done on Boards as ThePhils.com). It doesn´t hurt to let your dentist know that you are active on different Phil Boards & that you plan to write a review when you get back home.
This will in the long run benefit both parties...customers as well as dentists.... since those dentists that choose to do a good job, who chooses the best dental labs & who refuses to accept bad work from the dental labs (having his patients/customers best interest in mind) will be those who get repeat business as well as new referred customers.
If i would recommend all kind of dental work in the Phils?
Nope ! Simply cause it´s not possible....to fly in for 3-4 weeks & have for example titanium implants done....you need more time.
However, if the filipino dentist uses/contracts a dental lab that take pride in their work it WILL save you a lot of money to have crowns & bridges made while on vacation...no question about it.
Regarding the dental labs work...it is crucial that "your" filipino dentist approves the work they do for you...for example how well the crown/bridge fits.... if it´s not perfectly done your dentist should send it back & have the lab redo the work.... far from all dentists do this! (the part of you as tourist flying back to your own country applies here).
You asked about The Sacred Heart Dental Clinic.... can´t help you there cause i´ve never used their service. But, try too google their name & see if there are any other customer reviews out there.
Many of the popular (among tourists & expats) filipino dentists have worked in the US (this applies even more for doctors).... which in my mind is a good thing.
You see...i´m not beeing gentle in my demands on filipino dentists....but i should´nt be... there are a lot of very good dentists in the Phils & they should get our business ($$$) ! Not those who think that the foreigner is a meal ticket that can be ripped off.
Cheers!
Patric

Hi there,
I took two years before I took the leap to go to the Philippines from Australia to have some crowns done. I was going to get 10 on the top done and the price in Australia was exhorbitant beyond belief. I knew quite a few people who had been up there to get their teeth done - however I was never happy with what I saw - even though the owners of the 'new teeth' were happy. I think anyone going to the Phils to dentistry should not go on price alone. They should also do as much research as possible - on the types of crowns - that are best for you. ( I settled on emax ). When you ask for a quote from a dentist they will normally quote you on PFMs (porcelain to metal) as they are the cheapest type of crown - however in saying that , they are also extremely strong. After two days of treatment - I quickly noticed the 'attention to detail' with the work the dentist did. In fact I was amazed. After two days I decided that the opportunity to have all my teeth replaced was an opportunity not to be missed. Ok, it cost me more money - however, the more I spent - the more I saved. I was going broke saving money !! Not really - but the
finished job was way beyond what I would expect. As to what I saved ? Well, I got a quote here before I went on the initial work - and then on return to Australia I rang another dentist who specialises with crowns in Melbourne. (for a start he had never heard of emax crowns (they are quite a recent relevation !) - and the difference in what I paid to the quote from the dentist in Melbourne was around $50,000 Australian Dollars. That is amazing !
All I can say is to anyone going to the PHils for dentistry - take you time to research EVERYTHING - and don't just try to get it all done in 8 days. You need, I think at least 2 weeks, as your teeth need to 'settle' a little...and any problems (I had none) can be ironed out.
things like where to stay - what to do on days off - what to be careful of - security - money changing - how to pay the dentist etc. I took plenty of notes on a daily basis and am happy to pass on any information to you FOC !
I guess one of the factors for many people going to the Philippines for Medical/dental treatment is one of 'fear of the unknown" - usually put out there by our local dentists or doctors. I can say that my decision to get all my teeth done was also based on the poor dentistry I had received here in Australia. In fact I can say that I was embarrassed with it once I saw it with the probe camera my dentist used. Mind you,
they were professional enough not to even mention it - but I could see it myself.
I have no qualms of ever going back to my dentist - and recommend to anyone, providing they do their research to go ahead - I have made some great new friends up there as well.

Thank you for that - that is the purpose of my post.
One of the things I discovered when researching this project was the outlandish
profits the dentists are making in western countries. I was disgusted in the
information I unearthed - (willing to share !).
I also came across a newspaper article a week or so ago - regarding alisted company here in Australia called 1300smiles. Let me quote just one paragraph
"Shareholders can expect a bonus after the company announced its half year fully franked dividend would be up 35 percent a share to 5.4c and up 35 percent from December 2007. The MD said that the groups net profit after tax was growing faster than revenus meaining the group had reached critical mass in terms of growth and profitability. "We now operate on a scale that enables us to increase the net profit after tax faster than revenue," he said.
This must be about the only company to have its share price go up by 35 percent while every other share on the market has crashed to never before seen LOWS.
Crooked teeth, rotten teeth, missing teeth and just plain ugly teeth can really make a persons life a misery. I know some people who are afraid to smile. No ones deserves that.
Dentisty is about health as well as cosmetics. My God, even I was suffering from depression when I looked at my old teeth in the mirror !!! But thanks to my wonderful, caring and affordable dentist in Manila those days are behind me.
Any queries , happy to answer !

Hi there,
What a fantastic post. If you feel disposed to do so, I would be really interested in finding out who did your dental work, how many quotes you had to compare and what you did about accommodation. I require 11 crowns and 4 bridges (I think)

Hi
I am interested in THE S comments about using the Phillipines and am very interested in who you used.
I am exploring the idea of going to the phillipines myself, but am finding it a bit confusing with what the dentists and doctors say in australia about the phillipines. Although some dentists I have spoken to say the work that comes out of the Phillipines is good they suggest it is not worth the health risk ie: hepititas and HIV. They state that even if they use the autoclave sterilising - do they use it correctly and have it maintained correctly.
I have been communicating with Dr Mazo's Dental Clinic in Makai City and also with Dr Ric and Arnette Fernando in Cebu. Both these have been featured on either A Current Affair chanel 9 or written up in the Herald Sun. They also have been the most talked about that I have found while surfing the net.
Another concern of mine is that my husband would be looking at implants - apparently due to the jaw/bone/gum settlement this treatment is not the best to be done in the Phillipines.
I can only find positive feedback from all notice boards online, I even rang the Australian Dental Association who warns of these dental holidays for some negative reasons on why I should not go (I am trying to be thorough). They could not even provide me with stats on how many problems come back from the Phillipines ? Infact they CRO for the Melbourne ADA stated he knew of no one that has come back nor did he know of anyone that had gone over
I find myself a bit confused and want to make the right decision on choosing the right person in the Phillipines and also the right location whether I should look at Cebu instead of Makai City after I have heard how dangerous a place it can be
Any further comments you have would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry SAR for butting in on your thread but thought it better than starting a new one
