Need Dental work done?

Then u just have to have it done in The Philippines!

In Sweden & the US prices are ridiculous...

In september 2005 i made my yearly trip to the US... after a week an old bridge started to bother me & eventually i ended up with the bridge in my hand. So, i went to my fathers dentist... 1 X-ray + reattaching the bridge came to $110 !!! ( it took like 5-10 minutes).

The prices in The Philippines are about 1/10 of what one would pay in Sweden...probably even less compared to the US.

If u need major dental work done... The Phils is the place for it ! Even if u add the airfare + hotel + domestic transport + spending money & the cost of the treatment in The Phils..... U will still be paying less than HALF of what u would back home. Even more important... The level of service % tender care u get in The Phils is unbeatable.

Over the years in Sweden i must have gone through something like 15-20 different Dentists ( Moved around a lot..) All but one have been more or less Butchers.. The one i like is just to expensive. No way i´m paying that kind of money...

Must admit that i have a thing with Dentists.... I HATE GOING TO ONE !

Well, In 2005 i decided i just had to deal with my Dentist issues & my teeth (and i needed Major work done!).  So, after doing some research + asking Expat friends in Angeles City i called Dr Tayag & got an appointement.

When i arrived in AC & reluctantly dragged my ass over to the Dentist, i didnt really know what to expect... I met Dr Tayag & explained how uncomfortable i am around Dentists ( just want to run out of there...).+ that i wanted him to shoot me up with enough lidocain to numb a horse.

I told the Doc what timeframe he had to his disposal ( 8 days ) & asked him what he could do in that time & what it would cost me.

Turned out that i needed 3 two teeth bridges + 1 crown + 4 rootcanals + temporary bridges and caps while i was waiting for the real ones coming back from the lab in Manila + mending of several teeth + some other minor work. All of this in Sweden would have cost me about $10 000. Dr Tayags estimate was 50 000 something pesos / 900 something dollars !!!

His niece was at the time part of his staff ( she´s the one who did the rootcanals), anyone who ever had that done knows it might be fairly painful. I´ve had it done before and if i compare her work; It was number one !

Another very important factor when choosing a Dentist in The Phils is, check & make sure there is a Autoclave + X-ray & disposable instruments..... Dr Tayag has it all !

The rest of the work was done by Dr Jun (Tayag) himself. I cant say enough in his favor... Dr Jun is a Professional in every sence of the word ( 20 + years of experience). He listened to all my questions and explained in detail what he was about to do.

In Feb 2006 i went back to have some final work done that i did´nt have time for in 2005.  Could u imagine this... Dr Jun even cut his own vacation short to get back in time to get working on Patric... What Dentist in Sweden would have done that?

Sure, u can find cheaper Dentists than Dr Tayag... But we are talkin about nickles & dimes here...

As i see it... The main difference (aside from the cost) in having dental work done in The Philippines is; U are treated as a paying customer (not just another patient). The empathy and caring shown by Dr Jun is a major factor why i return ! Another advantage is; U will get the whole thing over with much faster than back home... & Dr Jun even lets u choose what time ie. in the morning or if it suits u better in the afternoon.

Hey Pat,

I contacted your Doc. I was hoping for a Dental Implant. He said that his "experience with implants is very limited", unfortunately the cost for one in the Islands is about the same as here in the States.  PP40,000-PP50,000 - or here in the States about $1,000. I might be able to save $100 there, but miss a day or 2 of vacation. Probably not an option.

Dr. Tayag was very helpful and informative. I will use him for sure if I need a Dentist while I'm there or if I want a service to where I can really save. I will hang on to his contact info.

Thanks for the recommendation. GREAT!

$ 1000 ?!?  U sure?...

As a matter of fact my Father (lives in the US) had a couple of implants done in 2005 and the total cost for one screw & the crown came to $2650, the whole procedure took 3 months.  Now, it will take 3 months WITHOUT complications...My Father is very satisfied with it.

Happy to hear u talked to Dr Jun.... Yeah, he is indeed helpful.

Cheers !

I have had 2 Dentists here to tell me around $1,000 a tooth. I live in a small rural area in the Midwest (Illinois). The implant will be in back to "replace" a molar, that is suppose to be cheaper because there is no "exact cosmetic" work to be done. They never estimated a full length of time, but Dr. Tayag did say it takes about 3 months AFTER the implant for the "crown" His exact words were - "It usually takes around 3-4 months before the implant is ready for a prosthesis."

Well, I have 2 bothersome wisdom teeth that NEED to be removed before I can have the implant. It was one of them that started my whole problem to begin.

I will get a FULL explanation of cost before I do it, MAYBE it is much cheaper there in the Philippines.

Thanks..

Patric,

I just had some work done here on 1 tooth. YIKES - Received the bill 2 days ago. I'm not sure what the 2 Dentists were giving me the price on, but it wasn't an implant. All I had done this time was a small crown on a tooth. $1,400:X  :?.

And this is one of the Docs that shays a whole implant is around $1,000. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to that Dr. again.

Your Dr. Nolasco G. Tayag sounds better everyday. Heck, I probably could have flown to the Philippines, Had  the work done and got a hooker for $1,400. The hooker part I wouldn't do, but just making a point..ha ha ha:D

Also, Thanks for the updated pic., if I go check him out, he will be easier to find.

Your "point" is actually very valid.

Here´s an example:

airfare = $ 1000

Hotel + food 3 days in AC = $ 120

pickup/driver AC - NAIA roundtrip = $ 100

1 crown/cap = $100

$80 left for 2-3  GRO´s :D ;)

Well, most people would probably not make the trip just for one cap...   But, when u start adding some work... 2-3 caps or a couple of bridges,  it puts everything in a very attractive point of view.

Why help paying for your local dentists Porsche...  When u can combine a wonderful vacation to the Philippines with some necessary dental work. ;)

Cheers !

During our most recent visit to Cagayan de Oro my wife wanted to have some dental work done. This involved extraction and preperation to replace an existing bridge plus fit an additional bridge to the top jaw and also two bridges either side of the lower jaw.

The whole process was done in three visits covering 5 days.

Total cost $1,000.00. the dentists name is Dr Dante B Pajo. DMD. his surgery is located at Bay 13, Don Gregario Pelaez Sports Complex. Don A Velez Street, CdeO. City.

In between attending to my wife my son and daughter also had their teeth treated 4 and 5 fillings respectively.

I also had a check up and will have crowns and bridges fitted on my next trip during summer of 2007.

My wife has a million dollar smile and I saved a fortune compared to UK prices but most of all the family were very satisfied with their treatment. The service was very professional and Dr Pajo was recommended to us by friends who are also Balikbayans.

Regards.

Jim Cunningham.

I would like to inform the group of another dental practice located in Lucena City.

The practice is called REDOR DENTAL CENTRE. they have two branches,

The practice is owned and run by Dr Mylene A. Santiago-Redor, DDM, and her husband Dr Raymund V. Redor, DDM.

Mylene is my wifes cousin and they have been operating their practice for around 15 years. Many expatriates as well as Balikbayan's use the practice and they treat infants, children, teens and adults.

Their services cover Pediatric & Orthodontics, Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry as well as Dentures and Crowns along with minor oral surgery. They also cover Breath Treatment and TMJ Therapy.

I visited the practice in November 2005 and had some treatment and was very satisfied with the result especially as being family my charges were waved.

I hope this helps this helps.

Hi Jim, I'm so glad I found this website.  And I'm so glad u mentioned a dentist in Lucena City.  I was born there and visiting this coming May.  I would really like to get my dental work done there because they quoted me $7000 if I were to get it done here in U.S.  But I'm concerned of the quality of work, specially it's not a place I could easily come back to.  Are their diagnostic and treatment equipments as good as they have here in the U.S.?  Are their education and knowledge as advanced?  Any input will help....and Patrick I would appreciate your input as well.  Are these dentist in Lucena friendly and will listen to me?  I hate it when doctors don't listen to their patients because they either don't have time to listen and explain or they think that they are always right, and everybody's body is the same.  Thanks!

Anna

Hey Anna !

Welcome to ThePhils.com ! :)

" $7000 "  Ouch !! but not surprising ;)

You are spot on with your questions. There is of course a risk that a dentist in the Phils will try to cut corners if he realizes that you´ll be leaving to go back to the US.

I think it´s a good idea to let him/her (the dentist) know that u are making yearly trips to the Phils (even if it´s not so) AND that u got the information about dental work in the Phils from online communities/boards AND that u will write a review of his/hers clinic when u get back to the US (be that good or bad). What i´m trying to say is that the more we can make businesses like Hotels, dentists & doctors to understand the importance & influence the web has.... this will in the end benefit all customers and those establishments that deserve to get our hard earned $$$ ;). A write down of a dentist will spread quite fast.... as well as a glowing rewiew will push customers their way.

Regarding the dentists education & equipment.... when sending the dentist an email (or calling the office) i would ask specifically if the clinic has an autoclave, x-ray & disposable instruments. If the dentist has worked in the US....even better. Usually dentists that cater to westerners or rich filipinos will have this.

Yeah, i agree with u Anna.... when going to a dentist or doctors office we should demand the same level of service that we take for granted at our favorite Hotel.... if they can´t provide that then we´ll warn our friends & spend our money elsewhere ;).

I´ve gone to 2 different dentists in the Phils & both have been far more gentle & serviceminded than what i´m used to in Europe.

As i see it; the bottom line for having dental work done in the Phils is saving $$$, you´ll have it done faster than back home, the dentist is gentle & u are treated as a paying customer... NOT just a patient.

Cheers!

Had some dental work performed while I was there recently, in Angeles at "MY DENTIST" who came recommended to my by three different people.  I was pleased with both procedures and price, considering what was done.  Realizing that I may have paid what they call "CANO" prices - the work thus far has been to say the least good.  Back in the U.S. the same work would have cost me at least three times the price, and I don't think I would have had any better service or product.

I just visited Dr. Tayag this afternoon. He was very friendly, very reasonably priced, and put my son at total ease (my sons first trip to a dentist).

Parking is easy just across the street on the other side of Fields Ave. and walk in's are not a problem.

Highly recommended.  (his address is posted  elsewhere on this forum)

If you are in need of an M.D., look no further than Dr. De Guzman. Located about  1 or 2 KM north of Tayag clinic on Fields Ave., he has been providing medical assistance, good advice, and anything else that was within his perview to me and my family since 1996.

Dr Esmeraldo De Guzman

Just before I had the dental appointment today, I had to get my right ear checked since I had some water lodged in it from a trip to a sauna hot tub the night before. Normally, I would let it pass but since I'm flying on Sunday I decided best to get it cleared up. Walked in, waited no longer than 20 minutes, and the problem was sorted out within less than an hour total. It's Dr. Henson, the facility is new and first rate. If you need an ear nose throat doctor in A.C. he is highly recommended...

I've unfortunately had to be hospitalized several times in the Philippines. The treatment and conditions varied, but here are some more tips in case the worst happens...

Orthopedic - I was hit by a Jeepney and broke my left leg. Also shattered the knee and destroyed most of the ligaments. Dr. David Cabatan at the Philippine Orthopedic Clinic in Makati City, Manila oversaw my diagnosis, surgery, and rehabilitation. I was going to do it in the States but was told that it would take 6 months just to get a friggin appointment with an ortho specialist, after going through all the crap of seeing a primary care provider (which I did - he told me to wear a brace for 3 months even after I showed him the MRI that Cabatan did as well as the analysis - which was SPOT ON - matter of fact the US doctor was haughty and prickish, telling me that the data I presented was "irrelevant".)

Philippine Orthopedic Institute, Inc. 2/F Don Jacinto Building, Dela Rosa cor. Salcedo Streets
Legaspi Village, Makati City 1229, Philippines

Telephone: 63 2 8921541 to 43
Telefax: 63 2 8924724

Also had a broken jaw resulting from another motorcycle accident (hint - don't ride in A.C. at night). It turned out alright, but I would NOT recommend Angeles Medical Center (AMC) for anything other than butchery. First, the nurse could not get the IV into my arm, and hadn't heard of the local anaesthetic for deadening the skin and surrounding tissues. They stabbed me probably 10-15 times before they got another more "experienced" nurse to do it - she got it the first time. This, after I had told them that I had narrow veins and it was hard to hit. It gets worse. They knocked me out, and went to work drilling holes in my jawbone, screwing it together, and wiring my teeth shut. Apparently, not used to adults who weigh more than 160 lbs, they did not hit me with enough anesthesia, and I woke up in what seemed like a nightmare of knifes and needles in my mouth. Apparently, the quickly hit me with another jolt (probably too much at that time). When I finally woke up much later, I had a bump the size of a walnut on my head. My wife was there and told me that when they were transferring me to the gurney, they "dropped me". Now, to add to the misery, when I came to, they did not have the medicine in the hospital (it was late at night) and my wife had to go out and search all over town for the prescriptions. And get this... after suffering a concussion, a broken jaw, and major facial surgery, the best pain med they would prescribe was ibuprofen !!!  They are VERY reluctant to dish ou the good stuff here (Percocet, Oxy, Morphine, etc) I assume it has something to do with the "sufferings of Christ". After watching people get nailed to a cross during Holy Week for the past 10 years, I guess thats why. At least my driver was able to get me some morphine under the table. AMC IS NOT RECOMMENDED. Go to AUF or if its not pressing, go to Makati Med or St. Lukes.

Anything else like legal issues, immigration, etc, best bet is to go to the VFW. Any trike driver knows where it is. Ask for Cliff. He can fill you in on what attorneys to look for, immigration issues, etc. You can also get a great meal there for a great price.

If you have any specific questions about Mindanao, Negros, or Cebu, drop me a message. I have lived in Cebu for 4 years and travelled extensively in most of the Visayas.

Cheers,

No doubt Harry the Horse knows his shit... He also has some decent hot dogs on his menu at the Blue Boar. A rather unknown hideaway just a block away from the VFW.

Hey Tony !

Welcome to ThePhils.com !

Ouch ! I´m happy it wasn´t me waking up not having access to painmeds :(.

Strange, i noticed this myself when in AC having dental work done (the fact that it seems like pharmacies don´t have any kind of good effective pain meds like codein & so on). I went to a couple of pharmacies that i knew would sell whatever i asked for without a prescription but no help there since they didn´t seem to have anything !?

Your experience from the Angeles Medical Center is a good warning for the rest of us, Thanks!

Experiences (good or bad) are always welcome as it can be of valuable help to the rest of us ;).
