Been going to and from the Philippines many years now. When in Manila tend to stay in Ermita area (hey! it's not that bad!)
On M H Del Pilar Street, I can recommend Southern Cross hotel. Double with AC and TV from 1000-1200P off season. Friendly staff, especially the girls behind the bar (it's NOT a girly bar).
Iseya Hotel, same price as above. A long standing hotel with a partly open air rooftop bar/reataurant on the 6th floor. At least it used to be partly open air. They've now put windows all round, which at least keeps out some of the noise from the busy street below. The bar/restaurant area has been cut in 2, as one half is now a KTV, but don't panic...soundproofing means you will not be disturbed if you're in the other half! Management has changed over the years. Last visit (Aug 2007), Wayne, a fellow Brit was in charge.
Slouch Hat...just opposite Southern Cross. Another long time place. Has a selection of rooms from 1000-1500P depending on size and if you want breakfast or not. A nice place in the evening, usually a pianist or guitarist to entertain you.
Amazonia...down the road and opposite side to Iseya (not too far from LA Bar). Has good standard doubles with AC and TV, again starting at 1000P. I have heard though that they do have some ST rooms, so couples/families may need to be aware of this. Also, the Amazonia is 24 hours bar/restaurant, live music Fridays and saturdays.
Park Oasis Hotel at Paco Park is one of my favourites. Prices from 1200P. Nice rooms, quiet location, good security, great staff who soon get to know your name, and a swimming pool. I will say though that I found the restaurant here to be expensive.
Just a few tips, hope it may help some of you planning to visit Manila...
