How do YOU feel about Marcos?

I have heard AND read many things. One thing for sure, if a FILIPINO starts out saying "I remember when The PHILIPPINES was great once....", what ever he says good, it probably happened when Marcos was President.

Examples: Unemployment went down....International Airport was top in Asia, Strong Economics, Building Schools, Building Paved Roads, Lets not forget  Longest Bridge in the Philippines...San Juanico Bridge...that was another Marcos project.

THE FOLLOWING INFO TAKEN FROM Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"Presidents Marcos and Lyndon Johnson during arrival ceremonies at the Manila International Airport Marcos' first term in office showed a lot of promise, building on the relatively robust economy by developing the country's infrastructure and intensifying tax collection. The unemployment rate shrank from 7.20% in 1966 to just 5.20% in 1971. He liberalized trade with the free world, hastening the industrialization of the Philippines. His claim for being responsible for the country's self-sufficiency in rice is highly disputed; however, there is little doubt that rice production was at its peak during his administration. Marcos also tried to strengthen the foreign relations of the Philippines. He hosted a seven-nation summit conference on the crisis in South Vietnam in October 1966. In support for the U.S. military efforts in South Vietnam, he agreed to send Filipino troops to that war."

I'm not saying the guy was a saint, or that he was a great leader, we all know how his leadership ended. :(

What if the NEXT President took that step forward to PROMOTE the PHILIPPINES as MARCOS did, just without the corruption and the human rights violations?

What are your thoughts?:)

Without the corruption? Wont ever happen in the near future due to several aspects.

I´ve heard very similar responses when asking Filipinos how the Phils was 30 years ago.

What people tend to oversee/forget is that the US was very much involved at that time, u had A LOT of US troops in the Phils which generated plenty of $$$ to their economy. The US was pumping in money to the Phils, building highways, sorry to say, due to corruption & neglect most that was built has NOT been maintained....

I don´t know enough to be able to say if Marcos alone was better for the people or if it was a mix of Marcos & the American troops beeing stationed there & their $$$ that made the economy & everyday life better/cheaper for the average Filipino.

Cheers!

I dont really know the whole story of Marcos because I wasnt born during that time and when we studied history in highschool i didnt listen to my teacher LOL, but according to my sister, Marcos is really an intelligent person, a good leader cause during his time Philippines belonged to the top riches country of the world. During his time it was peaceful and philippines wasnt very poor like now. My sister said, it was his wife Emilda Marcos who forced him ( dectated him) to something bad like curruption and marshalo, do u know that Emilda Marcos had a whole house of shoes?

YEP tommygurl86, the whole WORLD knows about Imelda and her shoes!:D

She took that shoe shopping to a whole new level. Just a shame she stole most of the money to buy the shoes, or so "they" say.

Let's just say that the above projects were but a penny compared to the billions of dollars the Marcoses had deposited in foreign banks and to the corporations they and their cronies owned that time. Picture a grandmother lining up near a barracks to get a week's ration of 1/2 gal of kerosene while the cronies, including the Minister of Energy, were jetsetting in their private jets all over the world. How would you like to be in a school where campus journalism was suppressed and be warned by parents not to join any campus orgs, else you might end up in "stockades" or be salvaged or you'd jsut disappear on the face of the earth! Curfew was imposed even for places with zero crime rate, so school plays,  parties, graduation rites must be done before 10 pm. Take note, there were not cars  in remote places, so if the sirens went off and you're still on the road,  better duck your head on the bushes when the patrol car passes by.  Those were the days (Marcos regime)  when the only true statement in the Phil newspapers was the date !

Those are great points to consider. I wasn't implying he was good for the country, please believe me. Many people have NO clue to what all he (they) did...GOOD or BAD.

Thanks for your reply :) I hope I didn't stir up old feelings.;)

The problem was the Marcoses  wanted to perpetuate their power and had no intention of leaving Malacanang--thus the declaration of Martial Law. Anyway, it's good to stir up old political feelings, Kevin. Sad to say, Filipinos  tend to get amnesiac during elections.
